Situated in the Malabar Hill area, the Jayamahal Palace was regarded as one of the most beautiful private residences ever built in Bombay (now Mumbai). Standing on the western side of the hill, the Palace looked onto the Arabian sea. It was commissioned by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, probably in the 1900s.
It was built in the Scottish style of architecture and somewhat resembled the Kothi Building in Baroda. The building was built like mini-Lukshmi Vilas Palace and had a double storeyed, magnificent Durbar and sprawling gardens with a driveway.
During 1916’s, at the request of Bombay Govt, for use as Hospital for Military Officers, certain alterations were too carried out. To prevent the ill-effects of sea breeze on stone & iron work, window heads were protected by lead sheets. Electric lights & fans were provided in the officers’ quarters.
It was in 1919 when the palace was handed back to the Gaekwad. Repairs & restoration were carried out for the same.
Unfortunately only the compound walls remain today, and can be seen from the Priyadarshini Park on Napean Sea Road, Bombay.
PS: It was also known as Jai Mahal Palace.
