Mastu Baug

Vadodara-Baroda By No Comments

Just like the Motibaug palace, the Mastu baug was a wooden mansion situated inside the Lukshmi Vilas Palace‘s compound. It is believed to have been constructed in 1887.

Looking at the old photographs of the building it can be said that it was a beautiful amalgamation of Gujarati woodwork and Marathi Wada style architecture. As seen in the picture the building was a triple-storeyed structure with delicate wooden balconies trailing the first floor. The ground floor was featured open verandas with the typical stone base, wooden post, and brackets. While this was on the exterior side of the building, the core of the building consisted of a thick brick & lime mortar wall system, with the whole building resting on a high stone plinth.

Unfortunately, this elegant example of the amalgamation of two regional styles of architecture was demolished sometime in the late 1960s, and now can only be seen in pictures.
