Located just on the ghats of Vishwamitri River, the Kamnath Mahadev Temple was built in the early 19th century. It is said that the area was developed during the reign of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad I by his brother Fatehsinhrao Gaekwad.

Shri Kamnath Temple

In the olden days, the temple was visited by thousands of devotees. They would first take a dip in the river and then visit the temple. The temple features an open sabha mandap decorated with eight figures of “digpals” playing different musical instruments. In the middle of this sabha mandap is the idol of “nandi” seated on a pedestal. Followed by this is the Garbha Griha, topped with a shikhara. What makes this temple different from the other temples are the lion figures decorating the corners of the parapet of the temple. Along with the other idols, the temple also houses an idol of Lord Hanuman with Anjani Devi.

Over the years the temple had fallen into disrepair due to neglect. Fortunately, after many efforts by the local agencies, the ghats along with the temple were cleaned by the city’s authorities. The temple has since been refined and painted in bright colors and restored to a better state!
