Jubilee Baug, a historic garden located in the heart of the city, serves as a peaceful oasis in the midst of a bustling urban landscape. The garden’s towering trees and lush greenery provide a much-needed respite from the surrounding concrete jungle. It is a popular spot among locals, who frequently visit for their morning walks or just to soak in the serene environment.

One of the garden’s most notable features is the stunning Buddha statue that adorns the space. The statue was inspired by the Big Buddha in Kamakura, Japan, which was visited by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III during his tour of the country in 1910. The Maharaja was taken by the expression of the Big Buddha, which led to the creation of a similar monument in Jubilee Baug.

The Buddha statue in Jubilee Baug was a collaborative effort between Osao Watanabe and Sessei Okazaki. Sessei cast the shape of the statue, while Osao designed it. The statue was brought to the garden from Japan and unveiled in 1912 by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, as a gift to the residents of city on the 25th anniversary of his rule. The statue is a significant landmark in the garden and adds to its historical significance.

In addition to the Buddha statue, the garden is also adorned with a beautiful wooden pavilion and a variety of flowering plants. The garden’s entrance gate is another notable feature, which draws inspiration from the Sanchi Stupa. The gate is intricately designed and adds to the garden’s historical and cultural significance.

The garden does not only provide the people with a recreational space in the middle of the city but also with purified air, acting as the “lungs” of the city.
